"Angel De Cora -- Out of Place and Ahead of her Time"
Hinook-Mahiwi-Kalinaka/Angel De Cora (Winnebago/Ho-Chunk) was Smith College's first Native American graduate, class of 1896, an art major who went on to study illustration with the famous artist Howard Pyle (who taught N.C. Wyeth), and then taught at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. De Cora's importance as an influential Native American artist and designer is receiving growing recognition from scholars and influential arts organizations. Yvonne Tiger ('03), an Indigenous Studies scholar will discuss her life and work.
